Trinidad and Tobago: Flood alerts issued for southern Trinidad until Nov. 20 /update 1

Southern Trinidad under orange flood alert for November 18-20; rainfall expected to exacerbate existing flood conditions

Warning

Event

Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service issued an orange riverine flood alert, their second highest alert, in effect from Sunday, November 18, until 14:00 (local time) on Tuesday, November 20. The alert covers the southern half of Trinidad, particularly the Penal/Debe Regional Corporation. The island has been experiencing riverside flooding since Friday, November 16. While water levels have been decreasing, new rain on Monday is likely to exacerbate the existing situation.

Advice

Individuals in Trinidad are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, and anticipate transportation disruptions. Remember that walking or driving through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
