Papua New Guinea: Parliament stormed by security forces Nov. 20

Disgruntled police officers and soldiers stormed the parliament in the capital Port Moresby on Tuesday, November 20, over the non-payment of a special allowance following the APEC summit held there November 17-18. Local reports indicate that security guards were assaulted, windows smashed in, and the interior of the building damaged. Cases of looting in nearby shops have also been reported, along with roadblocks in the vicinity of the parliament. Residual road disruptions along with a heightened security presence are to be anticipated place until the situation normalizes, likely with the payment of the allowances in question.

This was the first time Papua New Guinea hosted such a high-profile event, which represents high economic stakes for a country struggling with high poverty rates.

Port Moresby is one of the most dangerous cities in the world with very high rates of violent crime. Carjackings, muggings, rape, and kidnappings are common occurrences.
