US: Flood advisories in effect across Northeast megalopolis August 11-12

Flood watches and warnings in effect across Northeast megalopolis August 11-12; heavy rainfall reported in New York City, causing transportation disruptions and power outages

Warning

Event

Flood watches and warning are in effect across the Northeast megalopolis (including the cities and suburbs of Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, DC), as of Saturday, August 11, until the morning of Sunday, August 12 (local time). Notably, heavy rainfall caused flooding and consequent transportation disruptions and power outages in the New York City area on Saturday.

Additional heavy rainfall is forecast across much of the Northeast, including in the abovementoned cities, in the coming hours. Further transportation delays (including flight delays and cancelations) and power outages are expected in affected areas.

Advice

Individuals in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid traveling through flooded areas, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities. Anticipate transportation disruptions and confirm flight reservations. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
