UK: Annual Notting Hill Carnival in London August 25-27

The annual Notting Hill Carnival will take place in London August 25-27; additional police forces to be deployed

Informational

Event

The London Metropolitan Police Service announced it will deploy additional officers to provide security for the annual Notting Hill Carnival that will be held in West London from Saturday, August 25 through Monday, August 27. Over 6000 security personnel will be on duty to prevent violent crimes and heightened security measures will be in place, including the deployment of metal detectors in some areas.

Significant transportation disruptions are also expected in Notting Hill, Ladbroke Grove, and Westbourne Park areas due to road closures and crowded conditions. Transport for London (TfL) has recommended residents and visitors use tube and rail services during the weekend and warned that west London stations will be busier than usual. Specific road closures, bus and tube schedules, and their time frames can be found at the TfL website. Expect transportation delays in the area and allow extra time for travel.

Context

The Notting Hill Carnival occurs annually during the August Bank Holiday weekend, and is hosted on the streets of Notting Hill, and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. It is London's biggest street party and is the second largest carnival in the world after Rio.

Advice

Individuals in London during the Carnival period are advised to exercise an increased level of vigilance regarding crime and to allow for additional time to reach their destinations.
