Severe flooding kills six people on August 24-25; at least 6000 people evacuated

Heavy rains of up to 1000 mm (39 in) and associated flooding have been reported in central and southern Taiwan on Friday, August 24, and Saturday, August 25. According to government officials, severe flooding left at least six people dead and injured at least 100 more. In addition, an estimated 6000 people were evacuated as of Saturday morning (local time). Further rain is forecast in Taiwan through Monday, August 27. Continued flooding and associated transportations disruptions are possible in the coming hours and days.

Individuals present in the affected areas are advised to monitor developments to the situation and to follow all instructions as issued by local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
