Nigerian security forces clashed with Boko Haram militants in the village of Mayanti (Borno state) on Friday, August 24. According to a military spokesperson, at least three Boko Haram fighters were killed in the fighting. Security forces reportedly seized weapons and ammunition. Further clashes between Boko Haram fighters and the Nigerian military are possible in the area in the coming days.

Context

The northeastern region of Nigeria is highly susceptible to attacks by Boko Haram. While Nigerian military forces have pushed insurgents from much of their previously claimed territory over the past year, attacks by the group have been on the rise since June 2017.
