A second 5.0-magnitude earthquake strikes Tonghai county (Yunnan province) August 14; evacuations ongoing

Another 5.0-magnitiude earthquake hit Tonghai county (Yunnan province) at approximately 03:40 (local time) on Tuesday, August 14. According to initial reports, the quake was recorded at a depth of 6 km (4 mi). Local media reported that evacuations are underway, and no casualties have been confirmed as of 09:20. Additional earthquakes and aftershocks are possible in the coming hours and days.

Context

Tonghai county was hit by a 5.0-magnitude earthquake at approximately 02:00 on Monday, August 13. At least 18 people were injured and over 48,000 residents were affected. The quake damaged at least 6000 homes, forcing 11,000 people to be relocated.

Yunnan province is prone to frequent earthquakes. In August 2014, a strong earthquake killed 400 people and destroyed more than 12,000 houses.
