Congo: Terror threat against US and French embassies Nov. 30

US and French embassies in Brazzaville receive terrorist threat November 30; one associated suspect arrested

Warning

Event

The US and French embassies in Brazzaville were closed on Thursday, November 30, after receiving terrorist threats against the embassies of both countries. The Congolese government stated Thursday that a subsequent investigation into the terror threats made against American and French interests led to the arrest of one associated suspect. Though regular operations are expected to resume shortly at the US and French embassies, a heightened security presence is anticipated at Western embassies and other areas frequented by Western travelers in Brazzaville in the coming days.

Context

Thursday's terror threat against US and French interests represents the first instance of a credible terror threat in Congo in recent memory. In general, several Western governments regard Congo to be at low risk of terror activities.

More generally, several Western governments advise against travel to the Pool region and parts of Bouenza region due to the presence of armed militias, and near the border with the Central African Republic (Likouala region).

Advice

Individuals in Congo, and particularly in Brazzaville, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant in crowded public areas and report suspicious behavior to the relevant authorities, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
