France: Anti-far right demonstration in Paris June 3

Anti-far right demonstration planned in Paris on June 3; expect localized traffic disruptions and increased security measures

Warning

Event

An anti-far right demonstration is scheduled to take place in Paris on Saturday, June 3. It will start with a gathering at Place de la République beginning at 13:00 (local time). From there, participants are planning to hold a march starting at 17:00. The exact march route has not been released. Hundreds of people are expected to take part in the demonstration, organized to denounce far-right “facism” and in remembrance of the murder of a young activist. Similar demonstrations are likely in other urban centers, including Nantes and Rennes. Expect localized traffic disruptions and increased security measures around the protests. Outbreaks of violence are possible, particularly due to the expected presence of anarchist groups such as the "Black Bloc."

Context

The demonstration is being held in memory of 18-year-old anti-fascist and union activist Clément Méric, who was killed by far-right militants on June 5, 2013.

Demonstrations against the far right have been recurrent in recent months and years. Violent clashes between police and protesters and the use of tear gas occurred during similar demonstrations held in May 2016 and in April and May 2017.

Advice

Individuals present in France are advised to avoid all demonstrations as a precaution.
